Fibromyalgia- Why Your Doctor Could Be Wrong

Why your Doctor Could be Wrong!

The presence of chronic pain, tenderness to touch, moderate to severe fatigue, needles and pins, muscle aches, prolonged spasms, chronic sleep disturbance and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, are all symptoms often overlooked by your doctor who wrongly diagnose arthritis.

It is a common mistake, Fibromyalgia is not commonly known in the medical community.

Perhaps, you do not realise you have Fibromyalgia yourself.

Many sufferers experience 'brain fog' or fibrofog', which is identified by impaired concentration, memory loss, slow reactions and being unable to multi-task. It is also a possible link to sleep disturbances.

Other symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia, linked to a comorbid disorder, include a myofascial pain syndrome. Although Fibromyalgia is classified based on the presence of chronic widespread pain, sufferers have experienced localised pain in shoulders, neck, low back, hips and other areas.

Sensitivity to light, eye pain, blurred vision and fluctuating visual clarity, can also be symptoms of the condition. Resulting in sufferers changing their lens prescription more frequently.

The onset of Fibromyalgia, may at first be slow, often misdiagnosed in childhood as 'growing pains. Symptoms are often aggravated by changes in weather conditions and unrelated illnesses. On some occasions, the conditions, although not life threatening, prevent sufferers from leading normal activites such as driving or walking up stairs.

Although the disorder does not cause inflammation as in Rheumatoid Arthritis, some non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce pain symptoms temporarily in some patients, in the long term of have little or no use in pain management.

The cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, several possible links have been made to:

Genetic Factors
Stress
Sleep Disturbance
Dopamine Abnormality (restless leg syndrome)
Serotonin Inbalance
Human Growth Hormone
Cormorbidity Disorder

So how do you diagnose 'Fibromyalgia'?

Doctors use a set of classification criteria informally known as 'the ACR 1990' which define fibromyalgia according to the presence of the following:

History of widespread pain lasting more than 3 months- affecting all four areas of the body- sides above and below the waist.
Tender points- 18 designated points- using 4 kgs of force (enough to whiten a thumbnail), force is applied to those points. The patient must feel pain at 11 or more points, for fibromyalgia to be considered.

Treatment.

Hormones
Analgesics
Muscle Relaxants
Tricyclic antidepressants
Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Anti-seizure medication
Dopamine agonists
Combination therapy
Central nervous system stimulants
Cannabis

Other non drug treatments

Fitness
Massage
Acupuncture
Whirlpool Therapy
Diet.

Fibromyalgia can effect every aspect of a persons life, in the UK it has been recognised as a condition for claiming benefits and assistance, due to its effects in sufferers being unable to maintain full - time jobs. It is most prevailant in the ages between 20 - 50 years old, although onset can be traced back to childhood.

Help Your Child To read and Write

Helping Your Child Read and Write Better
Step by Step
By Marilyn Martyn

The book provides the reader simple step-by-step strategies and techniques to assist your children in enhancing their reading skills. The author's basic teaching philosophy is to phonics as a base to re-enforce the lessons your child gets at school. The book is written straight-forwardly and especially for you, the parent. The book addresses the four important parts to improving your child's reading skills: phonics, fluency, vocabulary knowledge and text comprehension. The learning lessons are: the sounds of letters and the combinations letters that represent them; how to blend sounds into words; how to spell the words; how to recognize words; spelling patterns; how to read sentences; the importance of practice passages; and the use of practice passages to aid fluency. Included in the introduction is the phonic checklist and an outline of the lessons presented in the book. This section focuses on the phonics. There is a phonics check list provided which contains, 18 vowel sounds, and15 consonant sounds. The author breaks down the basics of the English language and provides definitions for each component.

Lesson number 1 focuses on identifying the 26 letters of the English alphabet; what each letter looks like in Upper Case and lower Case; and lists both the vowels and consonant letters. There are three exercises provided in this lesson.

Lesson two focuses on the sounds each letter makes, first by looking at the vowel sounds and then looking at the consonant sounds; the importance of blending sounds and the role syllables play in words.

The next lesson, four, provides a chart listing each of the 43 sounds for the English language. Included in this lesson are instructions for four exercises.

Lesson four is dedicated to how sounds are spelled in words; lists the rules of English; examples of short and long vowel sounds; how to recognize a dipthong and its importance; the importance of vowel digraphs; consonant sounds and digraphs.

Lesson five is strictly pays attention to short vowel sounds. There is a graph listing the short vowel and the sound it makes. The author again provides exercises, suggests games such as the memory game to enhance the learning process.

Lesson six focuses on the sounds consonants make. The author includes in this section activities and picture representing the sounds.

The next lesson, number seven, focuses on making words with vowel and consonant sounds. There are 7 steps provided with a list of how to blend sounds.

Lesson number eight is dedicated to words with short vowel sounds. Again the author provides lists of words and how to pronounce them; points out the need to learn sight words; two exercises; and four activities you can use.

Lesson nine looks at words with the CVC pattern. The author defines what a CVC pattern is, how to recognize it and its importance. There is a list of words and sentences to review and practice with along with two exercises.

The next lesson, ten, looks at the sounds of "c" and "k" which often combined together make the sound of "k"; what is the rule; how to recognize and read this combination. There is a list of contractions in this lesson with examples and an activity for you to use to demonstrate the contractions.

Lesson eleven strictly focuses on consonant blends also know as cluster. There is a list of beginning consonant blends; final consonant blends; two exercises and two activities.

The twelfth lesson is dedicated to reading and write these words with consonant blends. There is a large list and two exercises for you to use.

Lesson 13, focuses on long vowel sounds. There is a pictorial list for each sound provided in this chapter; an important rule regarding when a word has the vowel-consonant-final "e" pattern.

Lesson fourteen looks at the different spellings for long vowel sounds; provides a list of examples; looks at digraphs; and lists one exercise and one activity.
Lesson fifteen is dedicated to vowel sounds spelled with two letters better known as digraphs. There is a list of examples, exercises and activities. included in this lesson.

Lesson sixteen is about when two vowels come together in the same word; what is the rule; examples of words with this pattern; and three exercises.

Lesson seventeen looks at other eight vowel sounds not yet covered in the text. There is a example list and three exercises.

Next lesson, eighteen, is dedicated to consonant sounds spelled with two letters, better known as digraphs. Again, there is a pictorial list of examples, exercises and activities included.

Great People in Baseball and American History

Great People in Baseball and American History

Some players have become part of America’s history, not just Baseball’s Hall of Fame. There have been some great administrators too that showed by their actions they were interested in more than just the bottom line in their ledger.

Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra is probably second in baseball folklore to Babe Ruth, but many times more interesting. Yogi (Lawrence Peter) got his nickname from a friend who said that he looked like a Hindu holy man (a Yogi).
For my money, he was the greatest baseball player who ever lived, but he’s probably most well-known for the amusing things he has said. Yogi is still alive as of this writing, and is still unintentionally saying funny things.
Here are some Yogi-isms:
“Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”
“A nickel ain’t worth a dime any more.”
“It’s like déjà vu all over again.”
“I didn’t really say everything I said.”
“If you can’t imitate him, don’t copy him.”
“You can observe a lot by watching.”
“If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
“I usually take a two-hour nap, from one o’clock to four.”
“If the people don’t want to come out to the park, nobody’s going to stop them.”
“You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going because you might not get there.”
“If you don’t know where you are going, you will end up somewhere else. ”
“Nobody goes there any more because it’s too crowded.”
“I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.”
“Little League Baseball is a very good thing because it keeps the parents off the streets.”
“I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house.”
“It gets late early out there.”
“He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.”
“The other teams could make trouble for us if they win.”
“You give 100 percent in the first half of the game, and if that isn’t enough in the second half you give what’s left.”
“You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours.”
Yogi’s wife Carman: “Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?”
Yogi: “Surprise me.”
“It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility.”
“The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase.”
When told by the New York mayor’s wife that he looked cool in his new summer suit, he replied, “You don’t look so hot yourself.”
“I always thought that record would stand until it was broken.”
A waitress once asked Yogi how many slices she should cut his pizza. He said, “You better make it four, I don’t think I could eat eight.”
And finally (because this has to end somewhere), “We made too many wrong mistakes.”

Lou Gehrig

Then, there was Lou Gehrig who died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS which progressively weakens and then destroys the motor neurons (parts of the nervous system that connect the brain with the skeletal muscles and control such actions as walking and talking.) It was a disease without a name at the time and is now referred to as the ‘Lou Gehrig disease’.
Lou Gehrig was born on Friday, June 19 1903, in New York, NY.
He was just a few days from 20 years old when he joined the big league with the New York Yankees on June 15, 1923.

Hank Aaron

Bad Henry and Hammerin' Hank are his nicknames. At this writing, he is still living. He was born February 5, 1934 and made his baseball debut in 1954.

Moses “Fleet” Fleetwood.

Moses “Fleet” Fleetwood played before rules regarding segregation (brought about by powerful Caucasians), were established. He was a great player by any standard, as was Jackie Robinson, but Fleet’s career was cut short because of the prejudice which was prevalent at the time. Fleet was 67 when he died May 11, 1924, in Cleveland.
Tough Question:
If you want to stump a baseball fan, get ready for an argument and ask, “Who was the first Afro American man to play major league baseball?”
The response you will get, most of the time, is Jackie Robinson, but the answer is Moses “Fleet” Fleetwood.
You can win money with trivia like that!

Branch Rickie

Branch Rickie was the promoter for the Brooklyn Dodgers who brought Jackie Robinson’s skills to aid his team and, by doing that, helped to break the color barrier in baseball.
Baseball continues to be a part of the healing racial inequities in American culture as more and more big league players come from ethnic minorities and even from outside the United States. In this way, the game of baseball acts as a Goodwill Ambassador around the World.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson, was the first black man to play in the modern, post 1900, big leagues. He not only had the baseball talent, but the necessary temperament and courage to do so.
Both he and Branch Rickie, the promoter, risked their lives and got heaps of abuse as they pursued their goals.
This was a major turning point in the social and spiritual growth of America. it would now be almost impossible to go back to an America so racially divided as it was in 1947.
If only for that reason alone, watch a baseball game and enjoy the diversity that is America.

Babe Ruth

Not many Americans over eight haven't heard who Babe Ruth was and/or something about him.
Babe Ruth was a legend. He has been one of the most talked about baseball players for years. In baseball, you do need to know a few of the top players of all time.
One was George Herman Ruth. Everyone called him ‘The Bambino’ or ‘The Sultan Of Swat’
He was a southpaw (left handed). He batted with his bat in his left hand and he threw with his left arm.
His height was 6' 2" and he weighed in at 215 lbs.
He was born February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, MD and he died August 16, 1948 in New York, NY.
He made his baseball debut on July 11, 1914 He played his last game on May 30, 1935.
Babe Ruth was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936.

Tweetlater

Having ventured onto 'Twitter', I found a whole new community who wanted information.

Just by tinkering around with the system, I managed to build a list of followers. Then I opened a can of worms and my list grew from 120 followers to 730 in one day!

Now I had to reply to all those who wanted information from me!

Luckily, for my speed typing finger! I discovered 'Tweetlater', who have a number of resources available. The one I was interested in , being the auto response to my followers.

This saved me from getting RSI!

So if you are thinking of joining 'Twitter' or currently use it, I would recommend using 'Tweetlater'
